The Manhattan Declaration:
Standing for the Common Good
Christians, when they have lived up to the highest ideals of their faith, have defended the weak and vulnerable and worked tirelessly to protect and strengthen vital institutions of civil society, beginning with the family. That’s why Archbishop Allen Vigneron signed The Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience, which he called an "historic document (which) intends to speak to all citizens at a time when many important foundational decisions are being made concerning the sanctity of human life, the nature of marriage, and religious freedom."
The goal of the Manhattan Declaration is to build a movement of Christians who will stand together alongside other men and women of goodwill to advance the sanctity of human life, rebuild and revitalize the marriage culture, and protect religious liberty. Read and sign the Declaration by visiting www.aodonline.org/manhattan.
The Archbishop's signing of this declaration does not come out of left field. Catholic Social Teaching has upheld and advocated the very notions at the heart of this document throughout the centuries. At a time when the very core of our social thought is often under scrutiny, and even under attack, the Manhattan Declaration pulls together leaders of faith to proclaim the core of our Gospel message to a world in which it is becoming lost, or at best, distorted.
